Northumberland Plate Odds, Betting Tips, Promotions & Predictions

The Northumberland Plate 2022 date is set to go off on Saturday 25th June at 15:30 UK time. This race is the highlight of a three-day festival that starts on the prior Thursday. It is one of the British summertime’s best days for horse racing betting. Note that the Northumberland Plate Festival 2022 is a flat racing festival, rather than a National Hunt racing festival such as the Cheltenham Festival or the Grand National.

Northumberland Plate Betting Tips & Predictions 2022

Despite not being favourite, at least as of yet, the standout candidate for this year’s Northumberland Plate is Trueshan. Rated at 120, the six year old is an expert stayer and will be hoping for some rain to soften up the ground a little bit. That didn’t happen at Royal Ascot where he was withdrawn; hopefully, a little rain will drop in the North East on Friday.

To be fair, this will be his third run on the all-weather tapeta. Being rated 120 in a class 2 event doesn’t come without its complications as the gelding will be giving a huge amount of weight to the rest of the field, 19lb minimum. Remember though that he lost by over six lengths in this race when running off of a rating of 118 twelve months ago. However, he did go on from there to win the Goodwood Cup Stakes by 3¾ lengths.

Bandinelli, Alright Sunshine, Golden Flame and Tribal Art all ran at Royal Ascot and should be primed for a charge just over a week later. The final pick, though, is Andrew Balding’s Spirit Mixer, a 9/1 shot that looks the most appealing at both this trip and weight. Given too that he is rated 23lb lower than Trueshan, the four year old son of Frankel is favoured. He also has Callum Hutchinson in the saddle for a potentially pivotal 5lb allowance. On the back of Balding’s runners at Royal Ascot, Hutchinson did enjoy some close calls plus a winner with Goo and will fancy his chances once again.

Popular Northumberland Plate Betting Markets

While this page is focused on a solitary horse race, across the three days of the Northumberland Festival, there are a number of bets that punters are able to place. Horse racing is synonymous with betting and there are many wagers that can be placed on the sport. You may be an experienced horse racing bettor or a beginner punter but below, we have outlined some of your options for betting on this sport. Should you already know your selection and want to put your bet on early, then it is a good idea to find a bookmaker that offers non-runner no bet in case your pick is withdrawn.

This wager is merely a bet on the horse that you have decided will win the race. After you have looked at the form and read up on some betting tips, you can make a pick or more on the horse or horses that you think have the best shot at coming home first past the post. Simply add your selections to your online betting slip and enter a stake that you are comfortable with to place your bet.

This is very similar to the bet above but allows you the space for your selection to come in the top four. In the case of some bookies, they can run promotions where they pay out on extra places. This bet involves two separate stakes, one for the win and one for the place. Just as above, make your selection and add it to your betting slip. This time however, you need to tick the Each-Way option which will double your stake. Then you can place your bet knowing that a top four finish should get you some money back.

This bet involves more than just the Northumberland Plate. You need to select four different horses that you believe will win in their own races. The bet gets its name from the fact that there are 15 individual bets that make up the one wager. These are four singles, six doubles, four trebles and a single fourfold accumulator. Should you choose to lose the singles, you can always place a Yankee which is      basically the same bet but worth 11 bets instead.

This bet is another that requires more than just one race. The idea behind this wager is to pick a horse in the first six races of the day that you believe will at least make a place. Should all six horses manage to achieve this, then you will receive payout based on a nationally announced amount to the pound.

Tournament Structure for Northumberland Plate

Newcastle’s biggest race of the year, the Northumberland Plate is a Great British horse race for thoroughbreds aged three years and up.

The race’s length is 2 miles and 56 yards.

Run as a flat handicap, the race is run over an all-weather surface.

The Northumberland Plate is run on a left-handed track.

History of Northumberland Plate

The Northumberland Plate was first established in 1833 and was originally known as the Pitmen’s Derby. The idea behind the race was to form the centrepiece of a race week holiday held for local people that worked down the mines. The first ever staging of the race was won by Tomboy at Town Moor, the race’s original venue.

In 1881, the event was given a new venue which was High Gosforth which led to the creation of new courses, a new stand as well as stabling for up to 100 horses. By 1949, the meeting was no longer considered to be a holiday and was moved to a Saturday in 1952.

Today, the race, or Plate Day, is the third and final day of the Northumberland Plate Festival which attracts a huge and diverse crowd of racegoers. In fact, the race is treated as the Northeast equivalent of Royal Ascot, but without all the pomp and pageantry.
